Probably the simplest way to reach the Tekkes isby Bcitoum and the trans-Caspian railway toTashkent, thence drive to Kuldja—a sixteen daysjourney at least for a tarantass—the total time fromEngland being from 40 to 45 days. Stores of allsorts can be got in Tashkent. The language is thegreat difficulty ; few Englishmen knowing Russian,and fewer still Turki, which is the more useful ofthe two. Whether it is worth while to go so far is a matterof individual opinion ; but for anyone who is notafraid of roughing it a bit, or of the hard hill-work,it is a fine country, and in my opinion one or two FIELD NOTES ON GAME 207 good Asiatic wapiti heads—I cannot promise more—repay a lot of trouble, while the ibex-shooting ismore than first - class, and there are plenty ofSiberian roe. On the whole I think that anysportsman who goes there must indeed be hard toplease if he does not have a good time with theKalmaks of the Tekkes. 80° ^^
