稀有種是指一類非常罕見、稀缺或很少會見到的生物。政府等官方機構可能會指定稀有種。地球上約435,000種已知的植物中有36.5%是極度稀有種[1]

稀有種通常種群規模小,分布區狹窄,面臨生境破碎化氣候變暖等環境變化時更容易滅絕,走向滅絕漩渦(extinction vortex)[2][3][4]群落中存在大量稀有種會顯著提高群落的α多樣性[5]
